“If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.”
James 1:26
Reach for the stars. Life is what you make it. All you need is love. Cheesy quotes like these are plastered in most homes on wooden plaques, picture frames or pillows. I even have them. My favourite one is perched on a friend’s stove and reads:
I don’t repeat gossip, so listen carefully the first time
Women and gossip come hand in hand. When a group of ladies get together we all do it and not necessarily to be malicious. There’s just so much to chat about. I’ll be the first to stir up the Hollywood juice. Did you hear about the Duchess being pregnant? Miley Cyrus is back with Liam? Blake and Gwen?!? We talk about celebrities like they are family and friends.
Oh, the family gossip, especially involving the in-laws. I won’t even go there. Then there’s the mommy gossip, comparing lifestyles, discipline techniques and kids. As much as I try not to talk about others, it’s so easy to slip into. This is why God gave us one mouth, in my humble opinion.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). Words are powerful; they encourage and destroy (James 3:10).
Warning, I’m going to non-gossip about one of my friends. I met her when our firsts were babies, about 3 years ago. We’ve done mom groups, park dates and home visits, meaning there were ample opportunities to hop on the gossip train. I have NEVER heard her speak negative about another person, not even regarding her husband. And ladies, we all know how difficult that can be on occasion. I’m not confident I will ever achieve her level of verbal enlightenment, but I will always try.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You (Psalms 19:14).
James 3:1-12, The Untamable Tongue
Ephesians 4:29
Psalm 39:1
