Burrs. You know what I’m talking about, those brown balls, with tiny hooks on them, nature’s Velcro? Trekking through the bush, I’ll snag a few on my pants. I can peel them off, only to discover a collection on my sleeve, or in my hair. Burrs seem to never go away, like my children.
Emmalyne sits on my feet while I cook dinner. When I venture to the washroom, Makayla announces she’s coming too. Both drop their toys and run to my side the instant I move. I peel them off my back, only to have them cling to my front. It’s endearing, but exhausting, especially at night. Many nights I’m nose-to-nose with Makayla because, she cries and needs to sleep with Mommy sometimes, not to mention, hold my hand. This must be nipped in the bud, or soon she will think sometimes means always.
Recently, a relative asked why my kids want me so much (in a condescending tone).
Translation: what's so great about you Valene?
Wounded, I shot back, “I’m awesome!”
The more I think about it, the more I believe it. My girls are social, friendly and talk to whoever crosses our path. They are my shadows out of adoration, not insecurity. So high-five yourself if you are a mom with a fan club trailing behind.
There was a man in the Bible that was glued to God’s side. Enoch walked with the Lord for 365 years and then God took him to heaven. Enoch never died. What I find interesting is his age mirrors the number of days in a year. When walking with someone you step at the same pace, travel in the same direction and get to know each other through conversation. Enoch was God’s burr, so to speak. This story amazes me. Read it in Genesis 5:18-24. Do you walk with God out of adoration?
Genesis 5:24
Hebrews 11: 5-6
