“Hate what is evil, cling to what is good.”
Romans 12:9
Every time I see him I can’t help but smile. He usually grips a steam engine in each hand, sports Thomas the Train running shoes and has a wool funnel puffing smoke out of his hat. My daughters’ best friend already knows what he wants in life: anything from the Island of Sodor. From his toddler bed, toys, toothbrush to his socks and pj’s, everything is Thomas. I’ve joked that my friend’s house is a Thomas Shrine. Her two-year-old has the tracks, trains, mini trains, Lego, books and dvd’s. He eats, sleeps and breathes Thomas.
Recently, his obsession has rubbed off on my two girls. Makayla now sleeps in the matching pj’s and Emmalyne bounces on her bum when Gordon or James puffs across the TV screen. I occasionally trip over Charles and step on a mini Emily. The phrases, “Cinders and ashes and fizzling firebox,” can now be heard at both of our homes. And you know what, I think it is great!
This little train master reminded me to delight in the law of the Lord (Psalm 1:2). In the book of Joshua, when Joshua became Moses’ successor, God promised prosperity and success would result if the people of Israel saturated their lives in His word (Joshua 1:8). Paul and Timothy advised the Philippians to meditate on things that are good, true, virtuous and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8).
There is a reason to fill our lives with the things of the Lord. Jesus brings strength, peace, hope, healing, encouragement, correction, perseverance, provision…the list is endless. Practically speaking, when we fill our minds and hearts with good, there is far less room for evil to creep in. I’d much rather spend my days being happy than busting my buffers in negativity.
