The temperature is above 30. The sky, hazy from the thick heat. If it wasn't for the odd tree turning yellow, you would assume today was July, not September. As I pushed my stroller through the parking lot toward my doctor's office, a round plastic tube caught my eye. I stepped over the freezie wrapper melting into the pavement and recalled my many summers of heat waves.
We’ve had humidex warnings, power outages and droughts. Us kids cooled off in pools, sprinklers and with frozen food (if you could call it that). Mr. Freeze, rockets, cyclones and Klondike bars yum! It took only seconds of reminiscing when it struck me that I never gave Makayla one freezie this summer. We've had our share of stifling temperatures, with my poor kid missing out on the summer staple. How did I forget to get freezies? I seriously questioned if I was a bad mom and then gave my head a shake. Of course not! My daughter would have been shooting to the moon from the sugar high and coloured ingredients. Just a jellybean or Smartie gets her loopy within minutes. It’s probably why I never calculated if it was cheaper to buy single packs or jumbos in bulk at the grocery store. Some kids can inhale Swedish Berries, Bear Paws and Five Alive and remain intact, however, not Makayla.
1 Corinthians 8:12 &13 talks about how some things are ok for one person, while they are sin for others. And, we actually sin against Christ if we cause our brothers and sisters to sin through their weak consciences. We need to be mindful of how our choices can lead others astray. Corinthians 8 used the example of forbidden foods.
Today the "forbidden food" may be gossip, TV, alcohol, social media and so on. When shopping for clothes I keep in mind how short a hem or low a collar is, and strive to dress respectfully. I have turned off films and fed novels to the trash. I won't stuff my cheeks with timbits in front of a friend on a diet. Nor will I take my husband into a Victoria Secret when I want new panties. It's simple really: be considerate of others.
