“Listen to the statutes and rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live.”
Deut 4:1
It took three years to embrace my domestic kitchen responsibilities as a joy, rather than a chore. The sight of mixing bowls, measuring spoons and Dutch Ovens made me nauseous. Ok, I'm being dramatic, but I used to drag my feet into the kitchen and force myself to whip up something for supper. I loathed cooking, until recently. Now I aim to serve a new dish once a week. I scavenge for recipes through Google, family, friends and believe it or not, the back of food packages.
Chicken Bruschetta Bake. It sounded marvelous and seemed a no brainer: chicken breast, Stove Top Stuffing Mix, tomatoes, cheese and garlic. All ingredients cooked to perfection in 30 minutes.
Three times my stove spitted out tasty, yet extremely soggy casseroles. Puzzled and a bit discouraged, I carefully reread Kraft's ingredients and discovered I added diced tomatoes instead of crushed. Apparently there was a difference. Last night I laced up my apron, determined to get this recipe right and envisioned a crispy, flavourful casserole for my family.
I layered the sliced chicken, spinach (my addition), basil, garlic and cheese in a glass dish. While the oven preheated at 350 degrees I scanned the recipe one last time before mixing the dry dressing and crushed tomatoes. Down the list read 1 can (540 ml) of crushed tomatoes. The oversized can in my hand doubled the size. That was my problem. How did I overlook this simple measurement and make the same mistake almost four times?
In Deuteronomy 4:1-11, Moses commanded the Israelites to be careful to obey the Word of God. It is important for us to obey, but it is crucial to teach our children to do the same (Deut 6:7). We need to daily examine our hearts and actions to ensure we are correctly following the recipe of life. By the way, my chicken bruschetta was marvelous. My toddler inhaled it and I just polished off the leftovers for lunch.
