If I could look like anyone, it would be Charlize Theron. To me, she is the most beautiful woman in Hollywood, with her lean, strong body, distinct cheekbones and blonde hair. But, God didn’t make me look like her. He made me, me. Why do women scrutinize themselves? Whether it is our looks, clothes, talents, families…fill in the blanks. We compare and grow green.
After my first daughter I shed my 60 pounds of baby weight and transformed back to a pre-pregnancy body, except for my deflated boobs. Once you breast feed, your boobs are a lost cause. Now, with my second baby, the shrinking process is slower and discouraging. Even after busting my butt, my butt still doesn’t fit into my pants. Also, I can’t rid myself of this new friend known as the mummy tummy.
A cousin of mine had a baby a month after me. Within a week she posted a Facebook picture sporting a belly top and spray-on pants. I recently became more motivated to squeeze back into jeans when a college friend announced she was wearing her pre-pregnancy clothes. I wish I had her stomach. I want her metabolism. Always comparing. The funny thing is I’m sure there are women envious of me.
In Deuteronomy 5:21 God commanded Israel to not desire or lust after what their neighbours have. I understand why. When we size up ourselves to others we will evidently crush our self-confidence. God made us, us for a reason (Psalm 139:14).
