Sometimes I feel like I don’t have a moment to breathe. My toddler insists on sitting on my lap when I pee and my 5-month-old can only fall asleep if I lay cheek to cheek with her. I enjoy being a stay-at-home mom, but it’s exhausting. My days are packed with demands: meals, diapers, bottles, messes, cleaning, and laundry. Duties are continuously circulating. Through the domestic insanity I also have to ensure time is spent with my husband and God, not to mention time for myself.
In the last week I have thrown three birthday parties on top of my regular chores. My devotions slipped away amongst the chaos. I felt the impact of neglecting a few days in the Word with growing anxiety, restlessness and trouble sleeping.
God asks us through our busyness to, “Be still and know that I am God,” (Psalm 46:10). No matter how occupied we are with the obligations of mother, wife, friend, etc… we have a responsibility to nourish our relationship with the Lord. It’s amazing how when we take time to pray and read the Bible, Christ encourages us. He provides strength and peace for our hectic days and sleepless nights (John 14:27).
I challenge you to do as I do today. Supper, breakfast and lunch dishes can crowd the counter a little longer. The clothes in the basket won’t run away before they are folded and as much as I want to watch TV while my girls nap, Netflix will still be there later. I’m choosing to be still and remind myself that He is God.
Scripture:
Psalm 46:10
Matthew 11:28-30
